Steps 1 and 2 below are the whole job. Step 3 exists for one specific thing: giving Claude's regular chat, the one on the Home tab, access to the vault too. If you don't need that, you're done after step 2.

What is it? A free writing app. Your files stay on your computer, not in the cloud. It has good search, links between files and a pleasant view, and that's roughly all we need from it.

This is the number one cause of problems. When the folder is in the cloud, the sync service updates files in the background. If Claude edits a file at the exact moment the cloud is syncing it, you get a conflict: files lock, duplicates appear with names like file (conflicted copy), and sometimes changes just disappear.

If it is, don't turn the sync off. That can disrupt completely unrelated files. Instead, put the vault directly in your home folder, which is never synced:

Careful not to create a vault inside a vault. It happens a lot: you click Browse, wander into an existing folder by accident, and end up with folders inside folders. One folder, one location, done.

Claude said "file created" but you can't see it in Obsidian? Close Obsidian completely and reopen. That fixes most cases. Still nothing? The vault is probably pointing at a different folder. Click the vault name in the bottom corner, Open folder as vault, and pick exactly the folder you chose in Claude.

Who this step is for, honestly. Claude Code already reads and writes your vault after step 2. This step gives the vault to Claude's regular chat as well, the one on the Home tab. It's convenient when you want to ask something about your vault mid-conversation, without opening a code session.

What is MCP? Model Context Protocol. A standard that lets Claude connect to outside tools. We'll use a ready-made one called filesystem, whose entire job is to give Claude access to a folder you name.

You need Node.js. This MCP runs on it. In the terminal (Mac: Cmd+Space, "Terminal". Windows: Win+R, cmd) run node --version. See v18 or higher? Great. An error? Install from nodejs.org, the LTS version, a normal installer file (.pkg on Mac, .msi on Windows). If you see commands with the words docker or nvm on screen, you're on the wrong tab.

The easy way, from inside the app: in your system's top menu bar click Claude, then Settings, then Developer in the sidebar, then Edit Config. That creates the file if it doesn't exist, and opens it if it does.

The folder is empty, or there's no JSON file inside? It happens. Make it yourself: open TextEdit, in the top menu Format, Make Plain Text (required, otherwise TextEdit saves a rich-text file Claude can't read), paste the block below and save it into ~/Library/Application Support/Claude with the exact name claude_desktop_config.json.

Does your Windows username contain a space? (first name, space, last name) Then the command breaks exactly at the space, and you'll get odd errors like Access is denied or only half your name.

Four things that silently break this file

All four produce the same confusing result: everything looks fine and Claude simply won't connect. Ordered by how often our participants hit them.

A 10-second check: paste the whole file into jsonlint.com and click Validate. It points at the exact line with the problem, curly quotes included.

And don't paste this block into the Terminal. This entire step happens inside a file, opened in Notepad or TextEdit. Pasted JSON into the terminal and got a pile of errors? You didn't break anything. Close it and start the step again.

The previous steps give Claude your files. This step gives it Obsidian: its search, the links between notes, the tags, and the note you currently have open. The difference shows up when the vault is large.

Not connecting? Make sure Obsidian is open (no Obsidian, no server), that Enable HTTP server really is checked, and that you copied the whole key with no stray space at either end. Still no? claude mcp remove obsidian and run the command again.

The way to be sure: the path in both places has to match word for word.

Your vault is in the cloud. This is exactly what step 1 describes: the sync service and Claude touching the same file at the same moment. Move the vault to an unsynced location (your home folder), then in Obsidian do Open folder as vault on the new location, and in Claude re-select it in the folder picker.

That's only the chat display. What Claude writes into files is perfectly fine. Open the file in Obsidian and you'll see perfect Hebrew. This is exactly one of the reasons Obsidian is pleasant to have next to Claude.

Don't start over. Decide which folder is the real one, move the files you want to keep into it, then in Obsidian do Open folder as vault on it. In Claude pick that same folder in the folder picker, and run the test.md test again. The leftover folder can be deleted.
לפי הסדר: (1) ודאו שסגרתם את קלוד לגמרי ולא רק את החלון ב-X. (2) בדקו שהרצתם את הקובץ דרך jsonlint.com. (3) ודאו שהחלפתם את yourname בנתיב האמיתי. (4) בדקו ש-Node מותקן: node --version. (5) ב-Windows, נסו "npx.cmd" במקום "npx".
In order: (1) did you quit Claude completely, not just X? (2) did you run the file through jsonlint.com? (3) check that you replaced yourname with the real path. (4) check Node is installed: node --version. (5) on Windows, try "npx.cmd" instead of "npx".
בסדנאות עד אוגוסט 2026 לימדנו את שלב 3 כחובה, כי אז זו הייתה הדרך לתת לקלוד גישה לקבצים. מאז שלשונית Code בוחרת תיקייה ישירות, רוב ההתקנה הזו כבר מיותרת. הכספת הישנה שלכם ממשיכה לעבוד כרגיל: פשוט תבחרו אותה בבורר התיקיות של Code. אם אתם עדיין רוצים גם את הצ'אט הרגיל מחובר אליה, שלב 3 עדיין עובד מעולה ותקף לגמרי.
In workshops up to August 2026 we taught step 3 as mandatory, because back then that was how Claude got access to files. Since then the Code tab picks a folder directly, which makes most of that setup unnecessary. Your old vault keeps working exactly as before: just select it in the Code folder picker. If you still want the regular chat connected to it too, step 3 is still valid and still works.
